If the words 'income tax return' make your heart sink a little, you are not alone. Crores of Indians feel the same every July. The good news: filing your ITR online in 2026 is genuinely easier than booking a train ticket used to be. Here is the whole journey, step by step.
Step 1: Gather your documents
Before you start, keep these handy: your PAN, Aadhaar, Form 16 from your employer, bank statements for the year, and any interest certificates from FDs. If you sold shares or mutual funds, download the capital gains statement from your broker. That is really all you need.
Step 2: Check your AIS and Form 26AS
The Income Tax Department already knows most of your income. The Annual Information Statement (AIS) lists your salary, interest, dividends and big transactions. Matching your return against AIS before filing is the single best way to avoid a notice later.
Step 3: Pick the right ITR form
Salaried with income up to Rs 50 lakh and one house? ITR-1. Sold shares or property? ITR-2. Freelancer using presumptive taxation? ITR-4. A good filing platform picks this for you automatically, so you never have to memorise form numbers.
Step 4: Choose your tax regime
For FY 2025-26 the new regime is the default, with zero tax up to Rs 12 lakh of taxable income thanks to the Section 87A rebate. The old regime can still win if you have large deductions like HRA, 80C and home loan interest. Always compare both before you file. Saathi.Tax does this comparison automatically on your real numbers.
Step 5: File and e-verify
Submit your return, then e-verify it within 30 days. Aadhaar OTP is the fastest way: the OTP comes to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, you type it in, and you are done. An unverified return is treated as never filed, so do not skip this step.
That is it. With your documents ready, the whole thing takes about 10 minutes on Saathi.Tax. The deadline for most individuals is 31 July 2026, but filing early means your refund lands earlier too.
