A brown envelope from the Income Tax Department ruins anyone's week. The comforting truth: the vast majority of notices to salaried people and small filers come from a handful of simple mismatches, all of them preventable.
1. Ignoring interest income
Banks report every rupee of FD and savings interest to the department. If your return misses it, the mismatch is automatic. Even interest on an old FD your parents opened in your name counts.
2. Missing a job change
Two employers in one year means two Form 16s, and each may have applied the full basic exemption. Combine them honestly or the shortfall shows up.
3. Skipping capital gains
Your broker reports every trade. Selling mutual funds to fund a wedding still creates taxable gains, even if the money never felt like income.
4. Wrong ITR form
Capital gains on ITR-1, business income on ITR-2: the return gets marked defective and comes back to you.
5. Claiming deductions you cannot prove
Fake rent receipts and inflated 80C claims are the classic trap. If you claim it, keep the proof for at least four years.
6. High value transactions that do not match income
Large credit card spends, property purchases and big deposits are all reported. If your declared income cannot explain your spending, questions follow.
7. Not e-verifying
An unverified return is legally not filed at all. Thirty days is the window. Aadhaar OTP takes thirty seconds.
Saathi.Tax was built around notice prevention: we reconcile your return against AIS line by line, catch forgotten interest and dividends in your bank statement, and pick the right form automatically. The best notice is the one that never arrives.
