Life happens. Deadlines pass, mistakes slip into returns, income gets forgotten. The tax system actually has a repair kit for all three situations, and knowing which tool applies saves both money and sleep.
Belated return: you filed nothing by 31 July
You can still file until 31 December of the assessment year. The cost: a late fee of Rs 5,000 (Rs 1,000 if income is under Rs 5 lakh), interest on unpaid tax, and losing the right to carry forward most losses. Painful but simple.
Revised return: you filed, then found a mistake
Wrong bank account, missed interest income, forgot a deduction? File a revised return any time until 31 December, and it replaces the original completely. There is no penalty for revising, so never let a known error sit in a filed return out of fear.
ITR-U: the long window for bigger misses
Missed December too, or discovered unreported income much later? The updated return lets you come clean for up to four years, but with additional tax of 25% to 70% of the dues depending on how late. It is a costly confession, designed to still be cheaper than getting caught.
The cheapest return is always the one filed correctly and on time. Saathi.Tax reminders and AIS cross checks exist to keep you in that happy category, and if you do need a belated or revised filing, the same flow handles it.
