Form 16 is the single most important document for a salaried tax filer. It is your employer's certificate of the salary paid to you and the TDS deducted from it. Understand it once and filing becomes almost automatic.
Part A and Part B, in plain words
Part A shows the tax deducted from your salary each quarter and deposited with the government against your PAN. Part B is the useful half: your full salary breakup, exemptions, standard deduction, and the taxable income your employer computed. Together they are basically your return, pre-written.
When and how you get it
Employers must issue Form 16 by 15 June after the financial year ends. It usually arrives by email or on your HR portal. Changed jobs during the year? You need a Form 16 from every employer, and combining them correctly matters because each may have applied the exemption limit separately.
No Form 16? Do not panic
You can still file. Your salary credits are in your bank statement and your TDS is in Form 26AS and AIS. Small employers sometimes skip issuing Form 16 even though they should not; your return does not depend on their paperwork.
The easy way
Upload your Form 16 PDF to Saathi.Tax and our AI reads the gross salary, exemptions and TDS straight out of it. Two Form 16s from a job switch? Upload both and we merge them correctly, which is exactly the scenario where manual filers make expensive mistakes.
