It sounds like boring paperwork until it bites: if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, your PAN is treated as inoperative, and suddenly nothing in your financial life works quite right.
What an inoperative PAN actually breaks
- ✓TDS gets deducted at double rates or 20% on many payments
- ✓Your income tax refunds are held back
- ✓Filing returns and many bank and investment operations hit walls
- ✓Property deals and large transactions get complicated
Checking your status takes one minute
On the income tax e-filing portal, the Link Aadhaar Status option asks only for your PAN and Aadhaar numbers and tells you instantly whether they are linked. If they are not, the linking option sits right next to it; a late linking fee applies, after which the PAN becomes operative again within a few days.
Common hiccups
The usual failure is a mismatch: name spelling, date of birth or gender differing between the two documents. Fix the wrong one first (Aadhaar updates are usually easier) and then link. NRIs and certain exempt categories have their own rules, so check before paying any fee.
Saathi.Tax checks the linkage as part of PAN verification at the very start of your filing, so you find out on day one, not on refund day. Two documents, one link, zero drama: get it done before July.
